As approved Apple and Android developers, the boys and girls at Base have gone mobile.
With our first cross platform mobile app, delivered on behalf on RATP Yellow Buses (YB) this year, we’ve applied our trusted approach to digital to the discipline of mobile app development. With our first public release a high quality app, the team at Base have been responsible for every step of the project; we’ve planned, designed, developed and launched – into both the Android and iPhone marketplaces. With over 500 downloads a week consistently since launch, the distribution statistics have already surpassed expectations.
Be successful by demonstrating context
The app was carefully considered not to simply replicate the desktop experience of the work we had completed with the website Journey Planner, an approach that makes sense in any app planning. Delivering content and function that is relevant to the nature of the interaction implied by the device you are using is crucial to it’s success. When you are on the go and using your mobile device to access information, it’s clear that the nature of your interaction is very different to when you’re using your laptop and it’s hugely likely that the type and amount of information you require is far more specific.
In applying this idea, we developed a ‘stops near me’ feature for the YB app, allowing travellers to find bus stops close to their current location. By simply selecting a bus stop from one of those shown around them, they can view the next buses that are scheduled to stop there, and where those buses will take them.

But by far the most important consideration with the app for YB we delivered the core infrastructure that made the use of the data possible via mobile applications. At the planning stage for this work we laid the development roadmap for mobile integration too. And it was this that has made the complex possible.
