How do I get to the top of Google?
The search marketing question we get asked most and how we reply
Now, you probably wont be surprised to hear that there's no 'get me to the top of Google' button. How easy would it be if there was?! Well when you think about it, it wouldn't be easy at all because everyone would be pressing it. You'd have to employ someone to press it all day as you're competitors would be doing exactly the same!
So Google and the other major search engines have had to come up with a more sophisticated approach to how they organise the world's websites. They've actually made it really sophisticated, building in many rules and systems to help them decide which websites are more useful to the users searching with their engines.
And it's this usefulness which remains the key to how well your website will rank in the search engines results. In essence, the more useful your site is to people searching for information, the higher it will rank. When a site is useful people will visit and other sites will link to it. And this linking is one of the most important measures for usefulness.
Every time a site links to another the search engines view this link as a vote for it's usefulness. And so the more links a site has the more it is deemed to be useful. There is a phrase used in the industry that describes all of this very concisely; Content is King.
Great content on your site, draws people in. Original content gives the automatic trawling of your website by the search engines a lot to get their teeth into within your site. When compared with user habits
